Due to the amazing process of fossilization in some rare instances the soft tissue of an animal can be preserved. It is rare that these tissue impressions accompany the more common fossilized bone but it happens enough for us to be able to assign some skin patters to certain types of dinosaur, but not many. What is most striking about these excellent images is that they show dinosaurs to have have patterns in their scales. NB. The colours are not representative.
